THE MINISTRY OF TECHNICAL AND HIGHER EDUCATION ACCEPTS THE RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE TERTIARY EDUCATION COMMISSION FOR MILTON MARGAI COLLEGE OF EDUCATION TO BE TRANSFORMED INTO TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education (MTHE), Mr. Gilbert Cooper on Tuesday 1st September 2020 revealed to the administration and staff of the Milton Margai College of Education and Technology polytechnic (MMCET), that the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education accepted the detailed recommendations of the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) for MMCET and Eastern Polytechnic to be transformed into Technical Universities. The MMCET will be named Milton Margai University of Education and Technology (MMUET). This long awaited news turned the jam packed Great Hall into dancing and jubilation, with staff praising the name of His Excellency President Rtd. Dr. Julius Maada Bio for keeping to his promise.
MMCET will start the Technical University with three (3) Faculties- Education, Technology and Hospitality as the college has strong requirements for the new status according to the TEC recommendations.
In his statement the Principal, Dr. Philip John Kanu told the staff that, the new status has a lot of responsibilities which the staff must be ready to provide to the country to maintain the good name of the institution which has trained so many prominent personalities in the country today. We must continue to make our Alma Mata Extraordinary Oh.
Addressing the crowded Great Hall of the college at the Goderich Campus amidst thunderous applauses, Mr. Gilbert Cooper highlighted other issues for the transformation of the MMCET and the Eastern Polytechnic to Technical Universities which include budget and financial implications and appealed to all to wait until October this year when the two institutions would be included in the annual budget for the Tertiary Education in the country should the Technical Committee for the Implementation of the TEC recommendations completed their task.
He enlightened the staff that the Ministry shares the dream of the college to be transformed to a Technical University that is why the Minister and the entire staff of the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education accepted the recommendations of TEC and will now work with the Ministry of Finance and the Tertiary Education Oversight Committee in Parliament to make the transformation if the two Polytechnics happen soon.
He stated that Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Technical and Higher Education is concerned about the TEC report for the MMCET and the Eastern Polytechnic to be transformed to Technical Universities with all its recommendations for which a committee of various stakeholders would soon be setup to implement the plan.
Mr. Cooper further disclosed that he is impressed with the developments that have taken place in the college since the appointment of Dr. Philip John Kanu. The drastic transformation of the college, the cleanliness of the environment is a clear sign of the strong leadership of the college. As you entered the college, you will be forced to see and experience the educational atmosphere of the college. This is what suppose to be in a higher Educational institution. The administration has really worked hard for the new status, which the Ministry is very proud of the progress made so far in the college.
The President he noted promised to stop the perennial problem of strike actions that has contributed immensely to the collapse of our educational system in the country that was His government accepted to pay salaries of all government tertiary institutions in the country, subventions and the annual leave allowance of all staff. Both the August and the annual leave allowance have been paid to all staff of Higher Educational Institutions. An announcement made the staff to jump into dacing the name of the President that he is a HERO.
He requested the staff to suspend their strike action as government is doing his best to capture all the concerns raised in their proposed conditions of service during the budget planning for next year.
After a solemn plead from the Principal Dr. Philip John Kanu who even knelt down and touched the feet of the Acting President of the Senior Staff Association (Mr. SahrJimissa). That action of the Principal made the Acting President turned to staff and asked if they are to stop the strike action which has lingered in our the Polytechnics and teacher training colleges for some time now. The staff responded in the positive form and it was agreed for lectures to start again the next day Wednesday 2nd September 2020.
The Permanent Secretary continued that there are no trained and qualified teachers for technical/vocational education, one of the reasons for the transformation of the MMCET and Eastern Polytechnic to Technical Universities to train teachers and instructors for the Technical and Vocational institutions the Government of President is establishing in all the districts and even cheifdoms in the country. He appealed to the Polytechnics, Teacher Training and even some of the universities that are on strike to resume work immediately and those not on strike to continue the good work stating that government has promptly pay their August salaries and leave allowances and urged lecturers to resume work on Wednesday 2nd September this year.
The principal of the MMCET, Dr. Philip John Kanu revealed that he appreciates the team from the Ministry for the visit and commended the Ministries of Technical and Higher Education and Finance and the Government of President Dr. Julius Maada Bio for keeping to his promise to do away with the perennial strike actions by academic staff who now receive their salaries on time and that they have received all allowances.
He also informed that in readiness for the new Technical University status, he has done a tremendous face lifting to the College including fixing of all the facilities that will make a University function properly, and work on the quality assurance of the college which is another benchmark, that the college has published the results of the first semester and that 99% of lecturers have submitted their lecture notes emphasizing that the college has a zero tolerance against sexual harassment.
The Intermediate and the Junior staff presented a thank you statement to His Excellency President Rtd. Brig. Dr. Julius Maada Bio. They thank him for changing their lives and pray for his government and ask that God continue to protect and direct him to take the country to a higher height. They also thank the Minister of Finance for providing the financial support for the transformation of the college which is very visible now as you entered the college. They finally thank the Minister of Technical and Higher Education and his entire staff for accepting the recommendations of TEC for MMCET to be transformed into a Technical University.
Earlier, the Vice Principal and Director of Studies, Dr. Mohamed Alie Jalloh in welcoming all at the ceremony, said that the college is humbled and gratified for the visit and that the Ministry is represented at the highest level while the Registrar of the MMCET, Mr. Sheriffu Bangura, served as chairman.
The Dean of the Brookfields campus, Mrs Halima Jumu rendered the vote of thanks.
